We build stories

Overview

For more than a decade, visitors to Clayton, MO were welcomed to the upscale area by a vacant grocery store crouching at one of their major intersections. While a number of developers presented revitalization ideas, Ryan Companies, in partnership with Life Care Services, proposed the perfect solution: a luxurious Clarendale senior living environment to match the neighborhood.

We understood that being proactive and transparent with our partners and the community every step of the way would be critical to the project’s success. From quickly acquiring a Certificate of Need (CON) for a new healthcare facility (as required by the state), to incorporating a garden designed specifically for memory care patient needs, to staying in dialogue with the community about safety, traffic and vibration concerns, our team did as much work offsite as we did onsite. Presenting gorgeous views of the St. Louis Arch, the thirteen-story tower is a brand design breakthrough: not only is it Ryan’s largest senior living development to-date, the high rise is the largest to implement curved cast stone and cold formed metal framing.

In addition to spacious floor plans for independent living, assisted living and memory care, amenities include dining options, a billiards room, movie theater, wellness center, art studio, community room, garage parking, courtyards, patios and street-level retail.

Drawing on St. Louis’s deep history within the brick industry, the exterior design incorporates rich, textured masonry and crisp, clean modern lines of cast stone that mimic cut limestone and create a cohesive aesthetic with the surrounding neighborhood. The massing was intentionally set back along the western portion of the site to emulate adjacent towers lining Hanley Road to the north, while the east portion gradually transitions into the residential neighborhood context with a low-rise, three-story volume and pitched roof.
