The University of Iowa chose Ryan to manage the preconstruction and construction of its new data center facility because of the company’s strong estimating capabilities and mission critical construction expertise. This collaborative initiative with the University of Iowa Hospital has a diverse group of stakeholders with distinctly different needs that are expected to continue to expand in the coming years.
With initial leadership through the schematic and design development phases, Ryan provided system evaluations and alternative option pricing. This allowed the project stakeholders to make informed decisions very early in the design process, optimizing the site configuration, facility layout, system capacity and equipment selection while maintaining the budget. Options for additional power and cooling capacities, along with optimal interfacing with the University’s central utility plant, were developed by Ryan’s team collaborating closely with the design engineers. This planning was strategically essential for the University of Iowa in preparing for the long-term phased growth of the new data center to meet the all stakeholders’ future processing needs.
